The Youth Orchestra of Southern Spain (Joven Orquesta del Sur de España) has chosen Acompalia as the beneficiary of their next concert, to be held at the Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada on Saturday 15 March.
The concert, which begins at 8.30 pm, will feature classical favourites including the overture to The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, a selection of pieces for cello and orchestra by Saint-Saëns, and Dvorák’s magnificent 8th Symphony.
“This is a golden opportunity for Acompalia,” said Acompalia committee member, Lindsay Ostervig. “The orchestra has an international reputation and the publicity will raise our profile enormously, especially within the Spanish community. Most importantly, we have been allocated a large block of tickets to sell on behalf of the charity (at €12 per ticket). That means the chance to raise around 3,000 Euros in a single evening.”
Lindsay went on to say: “This sum will provide ongoing funding for our Telephone Helpline service. We also want to create a Helpline for the Spanish community. That means more patients with cancer and other life-limiting conditions, and their families in Granada province, can get practical and emotional support from our trained and caring Helpline volunteers in 2014.”
The Orchestra was formed last year. It provides performance, recording and touring opportunities for 70 of the most promising young musicians graduating from music colleges all over Andalucia. The orchestra’s director, Michael Thomas, was formerly director of the Almería City Orchestra and director of the Orquesta Joven de Andalucia from 2000 to 2011. He has performed, toured and recorded with a surprisingly wide range of musical talent, from Elvis Costello and Bjork to Portuguese classical pianist Maria Joao Pires and mezzo soprano Anne Sophie von Otter, and directed orchestras in the UK, Andalucia, Germany and Sweden.
Assistant director is Motrileño Antonio Romera, who studied at Octav Caleya and first violin is Emilia Ferriz, from Granada, who teaches at the Conservatoria “Carlos Ros” in Guadix. The project co-ordinator is president of Motril Young Musicians, Antonio Peralta Gámez.
