British Woman Rescued in Maro

A British woman, resident of Maro, Nerja, was rescued after having spent several days lying on the floor of her home. Her plight was discovered, thanks to her Spanish neighbours who had noted her absence.

Concern grew amongst the residents of Calle Maravillas in Maro as the days passed with no sign of the British neighbour, who often frequented the Hogar y Centro Social de Maro. The last time anybody had seen her was the last Monday of June, when one of the neighbours had taken her some soup as she was feeling poorly.

By the time Friday came that same week neighbours were fearing the worst, especially as she did not respond to calls at her door, so they contacted the Guardia Civil and then the Policía Local. The landlord had a spare key for the flat but the police were unable to open the door because the bolt was in place or because the keys were in the lock on the inside.

The fire service was then called in, who managed to gain access from the bedroom balcony on the 2nd floor. Once inside they found 60-year-old Barbara lying on the floor in a conscious state. The municipal policemen called for an ambulance, which took the woman to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía.

A couple of days before, an 87-year-old man in Nerja was rescued after suffering a fall when he was alone at home. This incident took place in Edifício Poseidón II, which is on Avenida Mediterraneo. A neighbour has raised the alarm after hearing him shouting for help.
