Motril Council has seen a 250% increase in the number of people requesting market stalls in the area. According to recent data that the town hall has been shuffling around this is due to the economic crisis as more people try to make ends meet.
In the past, payments for market stalls have been paid in advance per trimester but nowadays the Council is allowing stallholders to pay monthly. The Council has now authorised a further twenty stalls to be located on the promenade on Playa Poniente, which will sell clothes and footwear.
The present twice weekly market near the Mercadona supermarket in the area known as Los Alamos remains and there are also market stalls to be found next to the indoor food market in the centre of town. Food sales are not permitted and this includes fruits and vegetables.
The monthly maximum rate for a market stall is presently 47 euros and the increase in business has put a further 60,000 euros into the coffers at the Town Hall, although a spokesman for them says that this doesn’t really benefit the Council in any way due to the clean-up operations required after the stallholders depart.
