ALM FC LogoCD Almuñecar City football club, following their first full game as the newly formed club, playing out of Almuñécar’s stadium on the P4. The pre-season friendly was away from home against Totalan.

Remember, these guys will have to start at the very bottom of the Spanish leagues… so to beat Totalan  10-3 is a brilliant start, especially as Totalan will be playing this season in the Segunda Andaluza league, which is one higher than our boys from Almuñécar!

“This was a good game and the guys were fantastic for their first competitive match together.” said George, who also told us he didn’t even have to bring himself on to play, just, “leaving it to the lads,” he explained.

So, things are looking good moving into their very first season in the Spanish leagues.

The club has mostly players from overseas; young professional players, out of contract senior pros and graduates from their academy in Torrox. There are at least 5 Brits in the team including Gareth Williams, an ex Scotland international with 200+ games under his belt for Leicester City and Watford. There are also quite a few Aussies and Americans in the squad.20604412_1592292094175386_6404499379696086050_n

The Torrox academy is a full time residential outfit that is working with players from around the world and all the top La Liga clubs here in Spain and CD Almuñecar City is the fruit of the work achieved there.

They have been growing as an academy since their inception in 2013 and with their main focus going into having the right infrastructure and top-level coaches, they are proud to be entering their 5th year and will from, 2017/18 have their own senior team that will have to start to compete in the lower level Semi-pro leagues in the Spanish 7th division – similar to the Ryman league level in the UK.

All of the staff are current UEFA PRO or A-license coaches making the experience and expertise of what they can offer players as close to a category-1 academy in the UK as possible.

The progress of the elite academy team and level of play over recent seasons have been fantastic and nothing more so than the progress of players to professional clubs.AD Suki Sailing

They currently have 18 players from the past 24 months who are playing at professional teams this season in either the senior or U19 squads.

CD Almuñecar City’s August matches will all be away while the stadium pitch is being treated. In September they are hoping for a big presentation game against either Granada reserves or Motril, who play in the 3rd professional league. Then… at the end of September the league will start.

We’re all looking forward to the next friendly… and especially the season to come.  You can follow their progress here on our website, or on Facebook at CD Almuñecar City and of course in The Seaside Gazette paper edition.
