Convergencia Andaluza (CA) is not happy with the Mayor's plans to build apartments where the Estación Náutica stands and proposes keeping its pool instead.

“The destruction of the pool would represent a significant loss of public heritage and would make it impossible to provide functionality to this municipal facility; furthermore, the construction of a housing block would have a major environmental impact,”  read the party’s communiqué.

The CA (Benavides’ party) proposes installing a transparent roof to allow the pool to be climate-controlled and used year-round for senior citizens, therapeutic purposes, swimming lessons, and diving practice. They also suggest it could serve as an essential resource as a professional-training module in diving. 

CA pointed out that the plot on which the pool was built was ceded to the Town Hall in 1985. In 1987, the Council approved an agreement with Edificaciones Protegidas SL for the construction of the Hotel Los Fenicios, which included building “a public swimming pool at their expense.” This facility served as the the Costa Tropical, Estación Náutica and was subsequently used privately by diving companies.” 

Despite the evident lack of maintenance, the CA maintains that the facilities “are not in a state of ruin that would justify demolition.” Consequently, it has announced that they will submit a motion before the Plenary, proposing their alternative plan.

However, the CA affirms their support for the initiative for building social housing for young people, but that these should be built elsewhere so as “not to destroy the environment of the Paseo Marítimo and the municipal heritage.”
