The Nerja councillor in charge of beaches, Nieves Atencia, visited Playa de la Caleta after the fire on Christmas Eve.
According to technical staff, around 8,000 sq/m of cañaveral (reeds/bamboo) were affected, together with 30 trees, most of which were avocado trees, as well as two terraces of banana trees. Even two greenhouses were affected by the fire.
But it wasn’t only agricultural damage, because the wooden posts and rope connecting them, as well as cross planking along the access track were burnt. The track remains serviceable, however.
Councillor Nieves Atencia confirmed that the cause of the fire, which began on the beach, remains unknown, although a camping gas bottle has been found there.
Most of the wild vegetation will soon grow back and the Town Hall, with a bit of help from Costas, will put right the damage to the track.
