What a low blow! Just as the summer was set to begin, some bloody pyromaniac incinerated a whole fleet of pedaloes (pedal-powered catamarans).
The police believe it was pure vandalism, as the hence-known ‘Beach of the Molten Plastic’ is frequented by the young, armed with booze, music and full bladders… and in this case, with incendiary glee.
One dozen craft were completely destroyed, belonging to a family business on Puerta del Mar. The flotilla’s value was estimated at 36,000 euros… and the owner didn’t have insurance, so we can rule out a bit of compensation-seeking arson.
The stricken owner, Loreto Leyva, says that her family has been in the pleasure-craft business for over 30 years and now they have lost everything.
“We decided not to store the catamarans on the beach until after San Juan, precisely to avoid this sort of damage.” Kids throw everything on the San-Juan fires, including each other, bless them.
One local, giving his account of the fire, said, “I went out early on Saturday morning to buy bread for breakfast and they we still alight.”
