Well, it doesn't look as if Motril's Las Explanadas is going to be fully opened to the public any time soon.

The TownCouncil has admitted that it won’t be until July. Why this delay? Because as we have mentioned in previous articles, the custom-made paving stones are causing the problem.

Several of were found to be broken and the company that makes them and the building company who has been laying them are blaming eachother over it.

The Councillor for Personnel and Contracting, Juan Fernando Hernández, explained that out of the roughly 22,000 tiles in the project, about 600 (3%) are defective. Consequently, they got an outside companies to run some tests on the sample but these companies came back with conflicting conclusions.

Biting the bullet, the Town Hall has decided to insist that the paving job is finished and replacing the damaged ones.

Councilor for Public Works, José Balderas, explained whilst repairs are underway, pedestrian will have but not to specific work areas which are fenced off. Priority has been given to areas requiring emergency vehicle access.

Once the tiles are replaced, a 21-day waiting period is needed for the paving stones to settle before they can let the Motrileños trample all over it.

The Mayor emphasised that these repairs will come at no additional cost to taxpayers, as the contractor will have to sort it out from their own pockets, thanks to the existing agreement, which brings us to how much the project has cost:

Since the project was launched in last year, it has cost 2.24m euros which includes 2,200 square metres of gardened areas.
