More Policing Needed?

Councillor Daniel Barbero, a right-hand man of both ex-Mayor Benavides and Mayor Ruiz Joya, is demanding that the latter includes 20 more municipal, police officers within the 2026 budget.

Independent Councillor Barbero accuses Mayor Ruiz Joya of “making a presence on social media and organising fiestas a priority over citizen safety.”

He points out that, “guaranteeing the safety of the residents and tourist in Almuñécar and La Herradura is paramount and safety is not a show [spectacle] but an obligation.”

He reminds the Mayor that between 2003 and 2007 he had headed the Citizen Safety Department and even back then the workforce was insufficient.

“Twenty years have gone by and we’re in the same place; a town with 28,000 inhabitants and with a constant tourist presence cannot function without the necessary personnel,” he said.

Editorial comment: Almuñécar would get a bigger bang for its bucks by having more Guardia Civil officers; they are paid less (amazingly) than the local boys and instill greater respect from people.

The hazard beacons are a rip-off, in my opinion, as the triangles were much more effective. I am supposed to have a beacon for my motorbike! Where the hell am I supposed to place it so that it is visible. The only magnetic part is the gas tank and you can’t see it with the backbox on (I need the backbox as somewhere to keep the bloody beacon! – Martin
