There was an unusual incident at the beginning of last month involving a fleeing driver with his leg in plaster and a police officer who tested positive for drugs who collided during a high-speed chase in Bilbao.
The incident occurred early in the morning when a suspicious vehicle was seen leaving a trading estate in Etxebarri. The driver ignored orders from Ertzaintza (Basque regional police) to stop. Upon seeing the police, instead of obeying, the driver sped off, driving recklessly with the police car in pursuit.
The chase ended at roundabout, where the car left the road after colliding with the pursuing patrol car.
Inside the vehicle were the driver, a woman, and a minor. The man and the minor were injured and taken to different hospitals; Hospital Cruces and Hospital Basurto.
Following the accident, and in accordance with standard protocol, the Ertzaintza officer driving the patrol car gave a positive reading for drugs. The officer himself has requested a confirmatory blood test.
The Ertzaintza has taken precautionary measures and has temporarily taken him off patrols, assigning him to a desk job until the facts are clarified. Both he and his police colleague are currently on medical leave after being examined by a work health provider.
