We never seem to become accustomed to businesses that have been around seemingly forever finally closing down, which is the case of Cafetería Cavana in Nerja.
If you have been to Nerja you will have gone through that square and passed in front of Cafetería Cavana; perhaps even popped in from a beer or coffee. However, this Sunday, the 2nd of November, it closed its doors for the last time after nearly half a century.

It was in May 1973 when Cafetería Cavana opened for business for the first time but under the name, Cavana Snack-Bar. Back then the square had a different name, Plaza de los Mártires.
It quickly became a sort of cultural centre where people came to discuss politics and social affairs; Franco died in 1975 and people could finally discuss politics other than in the safety of their own homes.
Novelists, artists and journalists would regularly visit during the winter and, of course, when the famous TV series, Verano Azul was being filmed, this was where people who were interested in appearing as an extra came to be selected. Cafetería Cavana even appeared a couple of times in different episodes.
So what happens now? The owners, the Pérez-Bueno family, have sold the building to investors, who plan a complete renovation.

I used to love this place and always stopped when passing by.
A sad day and I’m too late to go for one last drink.
If the developers plan to renovate it it will be without its old character.
