Motril Councillor for Municipal Maintenance, José Balderas, swears that the obelisk underwent no damage, despite the crane used nearly tipping over.
If you have been following the online Seaside Gazette (yes, there is one), you will know that the 20-tonne obelisk was removed from the junction on Calle Cuevas with Calle López Rubio on the 23rd of last month.
The artist who designed it was far from happy with it being moved and even more irritated by the Town Hall’s plans to modify it.
Anyway, Councillor Balderas explained that, after carrying out the appropriate safety measures on public roads to relocate this artwork, the company in charge of removing the obelisk to its new location reported that “a minor technical incident occurred when the crane in charge of the relocation became momentarily unstable due to the weight of the structure.”
He pointed out that nobody was injured nor the structure damaged and that the company employed for dismantling the obelisk and moving it, were very professional and had “acted quickly and professionally, securing the area and stabilising the crane in just a few seconds,” he exclaimed.
Furthermore, the Town Council reported that they had had a meeting with the sculptor and informed him that everything was being done with the “main objective of highlighting its artistic importance.”
The changes that the municipal maintenance department wants to carry out is replace the old-style lighting with cheaper LEDs and repaint it.
We did mention in the online articles on this affair that the Town Hall has a bit of a dodgey record when it comes to taking down structures for repair and moving them to a new location; i.e., the jet fighter (Saeta) that adorned the street in front of the gasolinera just up from the hospital. Rumours have it that they completely wrecked it and are keeping very quiet about it…
