An Andalusian cardiologist, Aurelio Rojas, who has a wide, online following, thanks to his advice, posted a video on the benefit of olive oil and the mistakes that people make with it.
Starting with his advice, he suggests taking a tablespoon (15ml) of Virgen Extra olive oil every day and points out how it helps prevent dementia and cardiovascular disease.

The errors that consumers make is using cheaper olive oil and secondly, heating it to high temperatures which eliminates its beneficial effects.
Aceite Oliva Virgen Extra (AOVE) is not just a healthy fat, it also has medicinal value thanks to it bioactive composition.
- Oleocanthal: a type of natural phenolic compound which acts as an antiinflammatory similar to Ibuprofen.
- Polyphenols: antioxidants that protect arteries from oxidative stress.
- Oleic acid: improves endothelial function and insulin sensitivity.
Recent research shows:
A daily consumption of ≥7g of EVOO is associated with:
* A 28% lower risk of death from dementia
: A 30% lower risk of cardiovascular disease

OK, does this mean that you should only buy this most expensive kind of olive oil? Well, it depends what you are going to use it for. If it’s for medicinal purposes as shown above, then yes; buy a small bottle. You can also use it on your salads and on toast, if you wish. If it’s for frying, no, buy a normal-grade olive oil, unless you are loaded and don’t mind wasting money.

Reader’s comment: “s there a recommendation as to when this should be consumed? For example, before food/with food; first thing in the morning etc? Don’t suggest with a beer or wine chaser!” – George.
No, sorry, just that a daily tablespoon was highly recommended.
