A road accident on the N-340 where it passes through Vélez-Málaga in the early hours of yesterday ended the life of a 35-year-old cyclist.
The stretch of road on which the accident took place has no road lighting and apparently the cyclist had no lights on his bicycle nor wore a reflective jacket, despite it being still dark.

The 20-year-old driver of the car that hit him was seriously injured.
The incident occurred around 02.30h Saturday morning, which was the time that the emergency coordination centre, 112, received two calls, reporting a badly injured cyclist near kilometre point 266, travelling in the direction of Torre del Mar. Apparently, he lost the lower part of his leg in the impact and bled out, before medical assistance arrived.
As for the driver, he was rushed to Hospital de La Axarquía, where he remains hospitalised with head injuries.

Reader’s comment: “No lights, no reflective clothing, no road lighting, 2:30 in the morning?
Recipe for disaster. Poor cyclist. Even poorer driver that will have to live with that awful situation.” – PB Storey
