The Mayor of Almuñécar has issued a communiqué concerning the death of 33-year-old Gabriel Qohelet would succumbed to mulitiple knife wounds.
“Today I want to speak to you not only as mayor, but as a father, as a local, as a human being.

We are experiencing very sad days in Almuñécar-La Herradura. The loss of a young man of only 33 years old, a loved one, has broken the hearts of a family, a group of friends, and an entire town. Nothing justifies someone losing their life in such a cruel way. And the pain we feel is deep, it is real, and it is shared by all.
On behalf of the entire municipality, I want to send my most sincere condolences and all my love to his family and those who loved him. There are no words that can console a a loss like this. Only time and respect can help heal such an unjust wound.
But precisely because of that pain, I ask you to act responsibly. Justice is at work. And we must trust it. The institutions [police and judiciary] are there to protect us, to investigate, to judge rigorously, and to ensure that no one is left without answers or protection.
Anger is understandable. But violence will never be the way forward. We cannot allow pain to drag us into making mistakes. Because when a society loses respect, it also loses its freedom. And we, as a people, will not allow that to happen…
…I ask you that tomorrow, and always, we act with calm, with temperance, with respect for the law. Because only in this way do we truly honour the memory of those who are no longer with us. And only in this way can we guarantee a better future for our children. …”
The victim’s family thanked the Almuñécar Town Council for covering the expenses of the wake and funeral, as they did not have the necessary resources to cover them. They also thanked all the people who initially wanted to help by donating money to a collection launched for this purpose.

Reader’s comment: “’ve been living here for 20 years. This sort of news was unheard of in 2005. I truly hope our beautiful region does not succumb to violence and fatalities.” – Julie
Reader’s comment: “Nothing in this life is black and white; there’s lots of gray. The sad, fatal stabbing. Reports 04/04 said both men had been injured by knives. Both had been threatening each other for a while. Yet the report above seems to show a complete innocent. Stabbed by an aggressor.
So I guess a confrontation that got out of hand? Is it usual for the town council to cover expenses for wake and funeral? Perhaps the victim had friends. ?” – Patrick Barry Storey
Reader Responds: Dear Patrick Barry Storey, I’m here to shed some light on the subject.
Gabriel never threatened the aggressor. Gabriel was a healthy individual with much love and respect towards his community. He was much loved by everyone, the way he loved is his legacy.
I don’t know the exact reason to why the town council has covered the expenses, but in the eyes of the entire community it feels the least thing his town could do for him. Specially considering the supposed negligences that both the Guardia Civil and the Medical unit dispatched to the scene. The aggressor is already known for a criminal past of sending people to the intensive care unit in the hospital… and he has been in and out of prision multiple times before. He was supposed to be in prision from a recent ruling… but nobody knows why he was still out and around town…
There has been many negligences pointed out by the community.
The aggresor was a known police informant, a drug-trafficking snitch with priviledges maybe?
It seems he wasn’t cuffed nor treated as a murderer when authority first arrived to the scene.
There’s video proof, showing how he hands over his gold chains to a friend to prevent police taking it from him and he even rolls a ciggarette and walks around freely… while Gabriel is dying without care or attention.
I really wish more people speak up so the truth shines past all the misinformation regarding this injustice.– Neo
