Tragedy struck a family in Fonollosa within the province of Barcelona, 80 kilometres from the city of that name; their own dog killed their baby.

The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, around 18.00h.

At the time of the dog attack, the baby was in the company of its grandparents and it is not known why the mastin (which is not classified as a dangerous breed) attacked the baby.

There have been 50 people attacked by dogs in the last 35 years in Spain, half of whom were minors, including several babies.

One of the worse cases was that of a couple in their 60s who were attacked by one of the 20 dogs that they owned in La Llàntia de Mataró, in Barcelona.

In 2018 two people died (a 57-year-old Mother and her 41-year-old daughter) whilst out walking with their two dogs, (of the Dogo de Bordeaux breed).
