Motril had a visit from a whale just off its beaches, which was recorded by AWA Sports with a drone from a height that would not disturb it.

Even the Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, shared this short video on social media of this elegant monster. We often see dolphins but whales are a different matter.

The whale in the footage appears to be a humpback whale. This kind of whale is known as the “big-winged New Englander” because it has long pectoral fins or flippers, and the first humpback scientifically described was in New England waters.

Humpbacks are medium-sized baleen whales with a thick blubber layer, making them clumsier in appearance than some of their more streamlined relatives. They are well known for their spectacular breaching behavior, in which they jump out of the water.
