The driver who died in the accident on Wednesday night on the A-7 near Motril, was a 'kamikaze' driver heading in the wrong direction.
Spanish press uses the word “kamikaze” driver for somebody who deliberately drives the wrong way down a motorway with the intention of ending his or her own life, and consequently, the occupants of the oncoming vehice they hit. It does not include those that unwittingly do so, even if it ends in the same result.
With that clarified, the first call that 112 received reported the presence of a driver heading the wrong way on the A-7 heading west where the autovía passes through the municipaity of Motril was about 09.30h. Later calls reported that it had caused an accident near kilometre point 892.
The coordinating room immediately called out a 061 ICU ambulance, the Guardia Civil traffic police and the Motril Fire Department, as well as road maintenance in order to clear the lanes of the stricken vehices and debris.
Members of the Fire and Rescue Service had to rescue/recover a badly injured woman and the body of a man from inside the wrecked vehicles. It is not clear from the 112 press release whether the dead person was the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident or an occupant of the other vehice involved in the incident.

No one can know what’s going through a person’s head at that time. Unless there is a written letter of intent. The rest is just guess work and assumption.
Poor souls going the right way. Tortured soul going the other, maybe, or just a very confused elderly driver” – Patrick Barry Storey.
Turns out the fatality was the wrong-way driver and the two injured were in the other car – Ed.
