A reader writes in to say how he came cross somebody in the act of abandoning kittens in a plastic bag.
Today I had an example of what, to me, is an issue here and in in rural France. I went to drop cat litter off this morning and a chap in a 4-wheel drive dumped a plastic bag and drove off hurriedly.
I went to put my bag in and heard a distressed animal calling. I picked up the plastic bag; inside was one sadly deceased newborn and one yowling for food and its mummy.
I took them out of the bag and wrapped them in a towel, then set off to Salobrena from Molvízar. Sadly, yes, one dead. The other fell a asleep as I cuddled the blanket.
The vet asked if I wanted to look after the new born but I cannot with three cats and one kitten, plus I live in rented accommodation, So she said euthanasia.
I hope that whoever dumped these poor animals, have a seat in a very hot place. Not even the whatsits to kill them. I know your 4-wheel drive! Those cries will haunt me.

Reader’s comment: “It’s truly shocking how someone could dump an animal in a bin. I share your sentiments.
A friend of mine also found a young dog in a bin several years ago. She was able to adopt it.
For anyone reading this and finds an unwanted animal, Costa Animal Society (CAS) in Nerja is still taking in abandoned cats and dogs as far as I know and possibly another centre in Salobrena and Valle Verde Animal Rescue in Almunecar. CAS in Nerja found a home for a stray cat for me,
many years ago Maybe the Seaside Gazette could list the Animal Rescue Centres in an article?” – Julie
Reader Replies: “Julie. I have seen poor dogs wandering around looking for the drive-away owners. I still put food down or a snack stix. But these were newborns, eyes shut, one still just warm but dead and the other a fighter, looking for milk and a warm mum’s tummy.
Like I said, I have seen the same in Brittany. Some rural folk are awful. I feed two so called-guard dogs enroute to and fro from where live. They both need a good walk on a lead; one is tied, the other not.
So I’m a softy. Sue me. !!” – Patrick
Reader’s replies: “My neighbor and I have a cat feeding station near our houses. We have trapped and castrated all of the regular cats but we still sometimes have new ones come. We think people dump them off at our feeding station. Several are not feral as they obviously belonged to someone in the past, they know all about sleeping on the bed and know the rattle of the treat bag. Several have decided that it is nicer to move in with us than live on the street. We will continue to trap and castrate as long as possible. We feel that it is our duty to society to help these poor cats.” – Lynne Sawyer
