The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, said that if the UK and Spain do not reach an accord by the 10th of November, border controls will be reinstated.
At the moment, it is open without too much hassle, but the 10th is crucial because the modified Schenegen Accords come into force that day.
Minister Albares was meeting with mayors and other policitical representatives on the Spanish side of the Gibraltar border. He said that London had to get a move on because these negotiations have been going on for years; since Britain activated the leaving procedure.
He considers that Spain put a “balanced and generous” deal on the negotiating table “a long time ago.” The last time that he met with his British counterpart, David Lammy, on the 16th of September, he pointed out that this is not the result of Spain changing things, but rather the EU’s new arrangement for the existing Schengen Accord, therefore it is going to affect all the EU borders.
The Rock’s Prime Minister, Fabian Picardo, who is very conscious of the situation for the Gibraltareños and Spaniards who come over every day to work, considers the UK’s offer to be “reasonable and balanced” but that Spain, on the other hand, must “decide if it will continue to insist on positions that they know we cannot accept.”
Editorial comment: whoever voted for Brexit hadn’t considered Gibraltar, amongst dozens of other things, because the EU open-border between Spain and Gibraltar ; i.e., between the EU and Gibraltar, has been crippled by British, knee-jerk, shortsightedness in the form of Brexit.

Reader’s comment: “I wish that people would stop blaming Spain for an issue caused by the Brexit vote and the new Schengen rules. Gibraltar actually has an opportunity if they only chose to take it.” – Malcolm Franke
