Junction Embellishment

The Mayor of Almuñécar, Juan José Ruiz Joya, expressed his satisfaction on social media as his municipal administration had awarded the works contract for doing up the N-340 junctions.

The project, entitled Gran Eje Verde (Great Green Axis) will affect four of Almuñécar’s access junctions on the N-340: the one near the Guardia Civil post at the top of Avenida Costa del Sol; the La Paloma junction near the gasonlinera; the P-4 entrance, giving access to the two football installations and finally, the Los Pinos Junction, which is the only one that is a roundabout, yet the least busy of the four. The Taramay junction is not included.

The project has a budget of 171,050 euros, 88,750 of which for the decoration on the half-moon road islands, which will be adorned with huge avocado fruit and the work will be carried out by Guerreli.

“Today is a historic day for our town. With the awarding of the contract for the Gran Eje Verde, we are taking the first step to a renovation without precedent that will change the image of our entrance junctions,” said the Mayor.

He observed that the points of entrance to Almuñécar had not been up to the “standard of the beauty and potential” of the municipality.

Editorial comment: well, that’s all wonderful, but the western approach is still marred by an ageing, skeletal structure of what was supposed to be a hotel, and one that the Town Hall has been expressly told to demolish some years ago.

Furthermore, many believe that what is needed are roundabout junctions to replace these traffic-light controlled intersections, which would avoid the tailbacks that have been evident this summer at the Avenida Costa del Sol junction.
