Officer Threatens Driver with Gun

On the night of the 20th of April a car entered onto the A-92 autovia near Santa Fe in the wrong direction, speeding along flashing his lights at oncoming drivers.

One of the cars heading the opposite way to him (i.e., the right way) was a Guardia Civil patrol car, which had to swerve to miss him – they were not pleased. This was where it passes through the municipality of Fuente Vaqueros.

They hit the sirens and lights but the driver ignored them and motored on, nearly colliding with a lorry, not before attempting to run down the police officer who had jumped out of his patrol car to wave him down.

The officers in pursuit, managed to overtake him and pass well in front to get him to pull over. Again, instead of stopping he went for the police officers on the road surface.

It was at this point that one of the officers drew his handgun and fired into the air. This time the driver stopped.

The driver had covered nine kilometres driving the wrong way, which to give you an idea, this is equal to the stretch of the A-7 between Nerja and La Herradura.

The officers were not surprised to find that the driver was totally drunk. He was breathalysed and gave a reading of 78 mg/l of air. It is considered a criminal offence with more that 60 mg/l

Furthermor, it appears that the driver also has “mental issues” and reacted aggressively towards the arresting officers.

Now, before a judge he was found guilty of dangerous driving, which corresponds to a 1-year, suspended prison sentence. However, if he comes before a judge in the next four years he will have to serve prison time. Another condition to avoid prison was that he must rigously carry out his treatment for his mental issues.

He also lost his driving licence and is banned from obtaining one again for the next four years.

The judge also imposed a fine of six euros a day for six months (which is approximately 1,080 euros). for resisting arrest.
