Salvamento Marítimo was out Tuesday morning coming to the aid of a small yacht that had run aground on Playa de las Azucenas.
The Spanish Sea-Rescue Service received a call from the Guardia Civil at 08.17h informing them that somebody from the shore had phoned them to say that they had seen people onboard a yacht waving and calling for help.
The accompanying photograph is not from this incident, but from one that took place in La Herradura in summer 2021.
Consequently the Coordination Centre for Salvamento Marítimo in Almería despatched their rescue launch, Salvamar Gienah, together with their tug, SAR Mastelero.
When they arrived, they saw that the crew had managed to secure the yacht with line throwers. A line thrower is a device that casts a line to a remote position. It may employ one of several launching methods including guns, rockets, and pneumatics; there are even hand-held ones.
According to S.M., the crew had tried to enter the port but had had to anchor outside. However by morning they had lost control of the vessel because of the strong winds.
After pulling the yacht off the beach, it was towed to the Club Náutico de Motril, where it tied up at 12.20h.
