Removal of Asbesto in Almuñécar

An opposition party, Almuñécar-La Herradura Unida para la Gente has registered a motion to be discussed concerning asbestos roofing that remains in the municipality.

According to a law that came into effect in April, 2022, (Ley de Residuos y Suelos Contaminados), town halls are obligated to detect and remove dangerous material from building within the space of one year.

“Owing to a lack of information from the Town Hall, we will present a motion in the next Plenary Meeting of the Town Council, consisting of four points to identify and eliminate the use of asbestos on/in all public buildings and a Plan de Ayudas Municipales so that property owners can face the economic expense of removing this dangerous material,” explained Izquierda Unida Councillor, Francisco Fernández.

The said four points are:
1. The Town Hall should draw up with maximum brevity a list of public buildings that have asbestos within their construction.
2. The Town Hall should draw up a Plan de Intervención for the elimination of asbestos in public buildings.
3. The Town Hall should provide a Scheme for Municipal Grants to facilitate the removal of asbestos from private buildings.
4. The Town Hall should include within the municipal website the necessary information allowing affected buildings and the steps to be take to removed this material.

“We hope that all of the political parties back our motion and the governing party tackles this problem as soon as possible, as Almuñécar is already one year behind,” concluded the said Councillor.
