The Motril Municipal Dog Compound is under fire from animal rights associations over the state of the premises.

They have filed formal complaints with the Environmental Department of the Guardia Civil (Seprona) and with the Junta de Andalucía, stating that the company that has the lease for the municipal premises is committing irregularities in its management of the service.

Apparently, the Municipal Dog Compound has been under the same company for over a decade.

Gema Palma, who heads the SOS Animales Salobreña has expressed her dismay that the company, which has been denounced in other municipalities within Spain, amongst which is Jerez, is in charge of these animals.

In fact, last August the Town Hall cancelled the lease with this company over its deficient running of the service, which costs the municipal coffers around 145,000 euros each year to maintain.

Sra. Palma claims that the company fails in its obligation to provide veterinary attention for the animals in its care, especially those that arrive in ill health. Furthermore the kennels in which the dogs are kept are far below adequate – the wire cages have lose wires that can easily cause lacerations.

“We know that several dogs have died from being attacked by other dogs in the last year and furthermore they hand over dogs for adoption that are classified as dangerous breeds,” said Gema Palma.

As for the Town Hall, it explained that the reason that this particular company got the contract was because it was the only one that had come forward.

Finally, in 2020, Seprona opened an investigation into cases of animal cruelty and fraud within the Municipal Dog Compound. However, subsequent inspection have not turned up irregularities.
