Bogus police officer are targeting foreigners out taking their dogs for a walk in the Torremolinos area.

Bogus, plainclothes, police officers are targeting foreigners out taking their dogs for a walk in the Torremolinos area.

They sometimes operate in pairs and approach their victims and explain in half English/half Spanish that they belong to the Policía Local and that they have witnessed them not picking up their dog droppings and therefore will have to pay a fine. They also say they will be fined for not possessing the dog’s documentation.

One victims who has been living for a couple of years in Torremolinos was told that he had to pay a fine of 500 euros but suspecting that it was a scam said that they should all go to the police station so that he could pay it. They promptly walked off.

But he didn’t leave it there but actually went to the police station and told them what had happened. He was informed that this is not the procedure that municipal police officers take.

Another foreign victim said that when she was approached, and the conman even showed her his pistol, but she didn’t fall for it, either.

Torremolinos has citizens of 125 different nationalities within the municipality, amongst them around 1,300 British citizens and 700 Dutch citizens.

Meanwhile the real Policía Local are on the look out for crooks practicing this scam and point out that by merely impersonating a police officer they are committing a criminal offence.
