Abandoned Smugglers’ RIB

The wind has not only brought high waves to the beach, but also a beached narco-launch on Playa de Los Yesos belonging to the municipality of Sorvilán.

ECO Smugglers RIBThe 12m-long RIB ran up onto the beach in the early hours of Tuesday, around 05.30h. But it was not the only thing that the Guardia Civil saw because they also found 84 containers of gasoline next to the Ermita, left so that the craft could fill up.

However, the RIB developed a mechanical problem that made it impossible to get back out to sea, so the crew abandoned it, along with the gasoline store.

According to the Guardia Civil, they believe the RIB was being used for people-smuggling.

These craft have four, 300hp outboard motors (a configuration that was made illegal in 2018) yet this kind of smuggling RIB is detected more and more often, operating along the coast of Granada, once or twice a week, close to the border between the provinces of Granada and Almería.

Editorial comment: the Guardia Civil don’t have any thing this fast and the smugglers run rings around the Guardia Civil launches. So when they’re confiscated, why are they not turned over to the Guardia Civil for their use?

Dids: Excellent! They can keep the fourth outboard in reserve for when on breaks down.

One ran aground on Marina Playa years ago. The Guardia Civil removed one engine and started using it within weeks????????

But if they’re illegal wouldn’t they get nicked by their colleagues if they tried to use them; and who would pick up the fine?
