Brown Slopes

As was expected, the snow on Sierra Nevada has ceased to be crisp white and is instead a dusty brown.

GRA B SN Calima Tints Snow 23MR24That’s on the north face, whereas the side of this mountain range facing the coast is rapidly losing its snow covering, which is hardly surprising given these unusually warm days.

Two years ago another wet front in the Golfo de Cádiz tinged the Sierra Nevada and discoloured many white houses down on the coast. This time, the calima is hanging around and with rain predicted over Semana Santa, it doesn’t bode well.

No, nobody is claiming that arks are going to be all the rage; it’s just the weather and calima is a nuisance and not a cataclysmic event.

Anyway, the ski station had to close last Friday because of the gusting winds. Up here in Nigüelas, the wind howled, banging windows open and closed again, as well as turning objects on roof terraces into Fred Astaire imitators.
