Another Electric Scooter Accident

A man on an electric scooter was hit and injured by a bus in the centre of Granada yesterday.

GRA C&M Another Scooter on Roundabout AccidentThe 50-year-old man was on a roundabout where Calle Francisco Ayala and Calle Luis Amador meet. Apparently, the bus driver hadn’t seen the electric scooter rider.

An ambulance was despatch and the victim was taken to the Hospital de Traumatología. At the moment his injuries have not been made public but the impact caused the bus windscreen to break.

Editorial comment: these scooters should not be allowed on roundabouts. Riders should get off, and walk it over the nearest zebra crossing.

Mopeds and bicycles are not allowed on autovía because of the high risk of accidents and the same reasoning should be taken for electric scooters on roundabouts.

Patrick: You would have to do it on a percentage basis as there are a lot more bikers than electric-scooter or even cyclists on the roads.

True Martin. Same can be said for seeing those on bicycles, but most wear high Vis, from experience. I do think people should have to wear as a minimum. A high-Vis top and bike helmet. I wonder if you could compare how many accidents there were per year for electric-powered bikes and scooters, cyclists and motorbikes. Which would be at the highest? I’m sure someone with a degree could figure it out.

Patrick: It not a case of who has right of way, but that large vehicles like buses and lorries can’t see them, especially in twilight conditions; it’s like having pedestrians wandering around a roundabout.

Ditto cyclists. Moped and motorcycle persons.

Well, where do you draw a line? Electric scooters and the like are a tad faster than those on bicycles. But here it seems both types of transportation can be used by complete twits. One way streets? Pavement onto road, without looking and then back onto pavements? Both types of transport do this. But roundabouts? I’m a tad confused. If you’re actually in the roundabout area, then traffic coming onto the traffic area do not have right of way; be it a car, a bus or a truck. Maybe I’m wrong. ??

Scooters shouldn`t be permitted on the roads unless the “driver” has passed an exam. Many wander all over the road oblivious to everybody else and bus and HGV drivers are quite likely to miss seeing them particularly when they slide up the side of these type of vehicles.
