Nowadays you can use your mobile to obtain cash at an ATM, not just your bankcard but some people still prefer using dynamite.
This time it was in Puerto Lope (Moclín, Loja area) that was awoken by an explosion in the early hours of Wednesday.
Thieves were soon on their way with slightly scorched cash – the bank hasn’t let on how much yet.
Actually, they didn’t use dynamite but rather black powder, which can probably be “homemade,” if you’re happy with having fewer digits than standard issue on your hands, but best we don’t mention too much about that…
The explosion took place at 02.50h, destroying the ATM belonging to the branch of the Caja Rural on Avenida de Andalucía. Awoken residents called 112 to inform them that there had been an explosion at a bank.
The Guardia Civil were turned out who arrived after the culprits had left the scene. The call centre also despatched an ambulance, which was not needed.
The explosion also burnt out the CCTV camera incorporated in the ATM, so there are no video images available for the police investigation. There was also a scattering of half-burnt, bank notes.
The Mayor of Moclín, Marco Pérez, said that locals are “surprised” by this occurence as nothing like that had happened there before.
