Nerja Town Hall has taken over what used to be Restaurante Rey Alfonso beneath the Balcón de Europa or Reola as it is popularly known.
The said restaurant, where many readers will have eaten, opened its door for the first time in 1972 but went under going into debt because of the pandemic, unable to recover after 2020.
At a recent Plenary Meeting of the Town Council there was a decision to cancel the lease after the restaurant owners “met their obligations with the Town Hall.”
The motion was approved with the votes of the PP, who hold a seat majority in the council, the abstention of the main opposition party, the PSOE and the votes against from Podemos-Izquierda Unida with Nerja-Maro, Luis Peña.
Councillor Ángela Díaz said that Nerjareños are to be congratulated for this public acquisition whilst recognising the dedication that the owners of the restaurant had displayed over the 48 years of its existence.
As for what will become of this space beneath the reola, this has not been announced, probably because it has not been decided; whether it will be a new public space or whether it will be leased out again to a private business.
According to independent councillor, Luis Peña, he is not sure if the restaurant owners had paid off all their debt or whether there was even a proper lease in effect when the restaurant closed, as the original one had expired in 1980 and it is not known whether it was renewed.
