A farm labourer on a pig farm in Chimeneas (Alhama) lost his life in a fire, which is believed to have been caused by an accumulation of methane gas.
The incident, which occurred last Friday around midday, also claimed the lives of all the animals inside the fattening shed/barn.
The Guardia Civil from Granada stated, “All indications are that the fire was caused by a methane-gas deflagration, but this has yet to be confirmed.”
Representatives of the workers unions, CCOO and UGT in the city expressed their regret over this fatal accident and called for a gathering in protest outside their offices on Avenida de Andalucía in Granada against the accident rate in the farming sector.
They have called upon work inspectors to confirm that the company had a suitable prevention & emergency plan in place.
The fact is that the death in the Chimeneas accident is not the first; in May, for example, a 37-year old lost his life after falling into a cesspit/tank on a pig farm within the same municipality. His 33-year-old colleague also fell in with him, survived, after being rushed to hospital, seriously injured.
So far this year, there have been 13 work-place accidents resulting in deaths within the province, which is higher than the figure for the whole of 2022.
