GRA LEC Rio Durcal ValleyThe Grupo de Rescate e Intervención en Montaña had to rescue a hiker who had fallen off a vertical ledge between ten and fifteen metres high. The hiker was with a companion who was also winched out of the abrupt-sided river valley by the Guardia Civil helicopter.

It was just after 13.00h when the rescue service received a call out, telling them that two hikers had been descending the river when one fell after the rock that he was holding onto gave way.

The helicopter, after locating them, perched on one runner to let the two mountain-rescue personnel alight and attend to the victim. They first gave First Aid before immobilised the man on a cot so that he could be winched out.

As he had suffered multiple fractures, he was taken directly to the PTS general hospital in Granada by helicopter. However, first they dropped the injured hiker’s companion off at their car.
