Listening to all the aerial activity near Nigüelas was a give-away that Infoca was tackling a mountain fire. The question was where.
The ‘where’ in question was in the mountains behind Dúrcal in the Valle de Lecrín, next door to Nigüelas.
In fact, at 17.00h Infoca had already deployed two light choppers, two semi-heavy and another two heavy ones, as well as four fixed wing, water bombers and an observation aircraft — they had to get as much done before dusk would force them to retire and leave it to the firefighters on the ground.
Those firefighters consist of five units of six people each and a Brica (specialised unit that backs up normal firefighting units, each one with four units of ten personnel) so at the moment there are 70 firefighters as well as drivers, command-post staff, etc.
Going back to the air units, what they have been doing is bombing the advancing line of the fire and above it with water containing fire-retardant liquid. The reason is that where the fire was at 17.00h does not have much tree-covered terrain but above it there are pine woods.
More news as it develops.
