The Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, has been putting out posters with her face on it for the upcoming elections; probably not a good idea.
All political posters get grafitti and facial modifications added to them; it doesn’t matter what political party they’re from or whether it’s a man or a woman. However, there are limits, if it is a woman; not so for men.
When somebody scribbled, “More of a whore than hens” (quirky expression) and “shitty dyke” it has caused quiet a stir, especially so close to the International Day of the Woman, not only because its misogynistic but also homophobic, regardless of the Mayor’s sexual inclination.
If it had been a man, saying something like “shitty poof” there would not have been such a commotion — you’re a politician and you expect somebody to use a felt pen to give you a Hitler moustache or horns (cockhold — wife cheats on you) but whatever the effect the person who defaced her poster might have wish to convey, it has produced the opposite because left-wing sympathisers are prime suspects, although it is more likely to have been a teenager with more spots than common sense and certainly no political inclination.
The thing is that Spanish politicians haven’t moved on since the 70s when they would paper entire cities with their faces and stick loudspeakers to the roof of a car, blaring out party jingles and messages. They do not appear to have realised that anybody from 30 and under doesn’t look up at posters, because they’re looking down at mobile phones; they don’t read posters or newspapers because they only do social media and are not interested in the news.
So, it’s about time they stopped plastering the town with their faces, stringing banners over streets and all the rest of their dated paraphernalia, especially because they never take them down afterwards so that we have political posters, in tatters, hanging off walls for the next four years until the next elections.
Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, it would be more fitting to take a felt-tip pen to every political poster, regardless of party or whose face it is and write in large letters “Dejad de Ensuciar Nuestras Calles!”
