The far-left party IU-Podemos, essential backers of the right-wing Mayor of Almuñécar, has criticised him for losing a grant from the Junta.
According to the local, IU-Podemos leader, Francisco Fernández, Almuñécar missed the chance of obtaining a grant from the Junta de Andalucía for the “modernisation and sustainable management of the performing arts & musical infrastructure,” worth 102,084 euros.
Sr. Fernández said that the Town Council had failed to carry out the stipulated requirements. According to the governing party, they had not put Almuñécar forward because of the “time limit” on getting things ready.
The IU-Podemos Spokesman considers that the Mayor should give more specific details for not opting for the grant, as he considers the reason given as having “little credibility.”
Editorial comment: reading between the lines, with the municipal election in May, the IU councillor wants to put space between his party and the governing one, after years of providing the PP with their one vote that keeps them in power. When ex-Mayor, Trinidad Herrera decided that being a regional MP was more important than being the Mayor of Almuñécar, she left her 2nd-in-command in the lurch to maintain the Mayoralty.
It was the IU vote that tipped the balance and gave the present Mayor the top seat in the Council with his vote. At the time, most political observers considered that backing Juan Jose Ruiz Joya for Mayor so close to the municipal elections was political suicide, but he did it. Now, he wants to convince voters that he really is left-wing and not a conservative puppet.
