The installations have been closed to the public since before summer because one problem after the other cropped up, so there was nobody about when the methacrylate tank literally burst open. There had been a couple of maintenance workers restocking the tank with fish not long before but they had left before the incident occurred.
Consequently, the Town Hall is going to hire a company to audit the Acuario Municipal so that all the structural problems can be found, once and for all, to see how they will be rectified, explained the Councillor for the Environment, Luis Aragón.
“We cannot reopen the installations if we cannot guarantee the safety of people who visit them; people’s lives come first,” he said, adding that every time they sort something out, something else crops up: “it’s an unending cascade of problems,” he concluded.
The biggest problem is the heating/cooling systems. Every company that they have consulted say that the existing system cannot be patched up but rather it has to be ripped out and replaced.
In the meantime, the IU-Podemos opposition party have criticised the ruling coalition over the condition of the installations and that it had been closed all through the summer, precisely when it has the most visitors.
Party Spokesman, Francisco Fernández, complains that the Councillor for the Environment offers to explain what is going on and what they are going to do about it.
