Oliver Follow Up

Following up on the article about a child with a brain tumour, Oliver has undergone his first operation in Barcelona after returning from Mexico.

SPN Oliver Brain TumourThe operation in the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Esplugues in Llobregat, was to eliminate the hydrocephalu (excess fluid on the brain) caused by the tumour on the brain stem.

To achieve this, they implanted a valve (a ventriculoperitoneal shunt) to drain excess CSF into the lining of the abdomen where it is eventually absorbed.

The plan is to proceed to the next operation at the end of next week, which will be the partial extirpation of the tumour – they cannot remove all of it due to its delicate position. After that, the doctors will design the oncological treatment to be followed.

The father is very grateful that they were able to bring him back to Spain; this was thanks to a generous Spanish businessman (who wishes to remain anonymous) living in Mexico, whose help made it possible for Oliver to be flown back in a special, medically-adapted, aeroplane so that the operations could be carried out here.

“A Spanish businessman who lives in Mexico read about Oliver’s plight on social media and offered to cover all the costs, tell us that we could count on him,” explained the the child’s uncle, David Romero.

Editorial comment: it renews our flagging faith in the Human Race that there are people like this Spanish businessman. You can read the original article here.
