Almuñécar Town Council approved a motion by IU-Podemos on jet-ski usage within the municipality, however...
IU-P Councillor, Francisco Fernández, put forward the motion that privately owned jet-skis should have their access to municipal launching ramps restricted to between 09.00h and 13.00h, and should be charged for their use.
He suggested that existing businesses that rent out this type of machine should be respected but that no new machines should be permitted, unless they are ‘silent’ ones.
Furthermore, the Policía Local should be given instructions to carry out periodic checks on noise levels, as is the case with other kinds of noise-generating activities (bars/building sites).
Councillor Fernández also suggested that the relevant authority (Guardia Civil Maritime Service) should increase their surveillance activities and that all mention of jet skis should be eliminated from Town-Hall and Tourist Board, promotional material.
However, after the debate the Councillor for Beaches, Daniel Barbero, said that whilst the governing party gave the motion their backing, they were aware the governance over the coast is not their responsibility; i.e., they lack authority where beaches and coastal waters are concerned, as this comes under the authority of the Central Government’s Costas.
The Mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, said that this Council backing would mean that a report would be drawn up by municipal experts to ascertain what municipal authority covers, in this respect.
