Almuñécar Multiple Collision

There was a multi-car collision on the N-340 in Almuñécar at the P-4 traffic lights on Friday, just across from the Carbonell builders yard.

ALM Multiple Collision 24JN22 400x250The Policía Local were the first at the scene to deal with the five vehicles involved in this low-speed accident.

They were soon joined by the Guardia Civil traffic police and an ambulance in case somebody was injured and required treatment at the medical centre or area hospital.

According to the municipal police, the driver of a van was in the middle of a sneezing fit and hadn’t seen the car before him had banged into the back of the one in front, and so on down the line of cars.

Whilst the police were dealing with the details of the cars involved and statements from the drivers, traffic was rerouted around the junction. Traffic flow was restored to normality once the last car was towed away.

Editorial comment: that junction would work much, much better if it were a roundabout instead of its present layout, governed by traffic lights. There is more than enough space there to convert it into a decent-sized roundabout.

Fred: this junction comprises of two gardened hemispheres divided by the main road that goes between them i: i.e., it is a roundabout but with a road going through it as well. Joining the two hemispheres would actually bring about less tarmac.

There is, however, a superfluous roundabout a bit further along (los Pinos, easily recognised by its hideous central adornment), which used to be a T-junction. Why that junction was turned into a roundabout and not the far busier P-4 one, is a mystery.

The La Paloma N-340 junction should also be a roundabout – that’s the main entrance into Almuñécar near the main-road petrol station. The present P-4 junction has the same layout as the main entrance junction (gas station).

I don’t know the specific junction but generally roundabouts are less pedestrian and cyclist friendly than traffic lights plus cost a whole lot more and of course yet more tarmac
