Three members of the Almuñécar fire service will join an expedition that set off from the fire station on Tuesday enroute for Poland with humanitarian aid.
The 2,000 kilos of food and equipment, which was loaded into two vans, is part of the initiative of the NGO GERCCMA (Grupo de Especialistas en Rescate Canino en Catástrofes Método Arcón).
Travelling with the fire personnel is an interpreter, who will bring back between them nine Ukrainian citizens who will be accommodated within the municipality.
As for the aid onboard, it was donated by private businesses, individuals and Semana Santa brotherhoods, explained the Councillor for Citizen Safety, Paco Robles, who was there to see them off.
He also reminded people who are interested in helping out with donations that the campaign to collect foodstuffs etc is based in the municipal stadium. The campaign, which began on the 8th will continue until this Sunday, the 27th each morning between 10.00h and 14.00h and in the afternoons from 16.00h to 20.00h. – weekends mornings only 10.00h to 13.00h.
Items accepted are non-perishable foodstuffs, medical material such as iodine, bandages, analgesic ointment, orthopaedics, betadine and sterile dressings, etc. Other material includes, generators, torches, batteries, warm clothing, etc.
Editorial comment: towns all over the coast, inland Granada; indeed all over Spain, have been carrying out such missions – Loja recently sent out a bus and came back with over a score of refugees. We haven’t been covering it because there are simply too many to pick one out. This expedition, however, was organised by a group using specialise dogs for finding victims under rubble – joining the Almuñécar vans was one from Ronda in Málaga with more material.
