The 22nd annual ballooning event will take place this weekend in the skies above Granada city, its vega and the Geoparque area.
This aeronautical event is the Festival de Aerostación and Campeonato de Andalucía, which is organised by Glovento Sur and the Federación Andaluza de Deportes Aéreos.
The event, which starts on Friday the 28th and concludes on Sunday the 30th, counts on 14 participants from all over Spain, amongst them the one that bears the logo of the Geoparque de Granada, with a basket that has room for twelve passengers.
The climate with its predominantly clear skies as well as the spectacular panorama including the Sierra Nevada, is ideal for ballooning, which is why these yearly ballooning events take place in Granada.
The event comprises of four flights – weather (wind conditions) permitting – during which the trials for the Andalusian championships will take place. On Friday and Sunday the take offs will take place from the Geoparque de Granada and Guadix, starting at 08.30h and taking in the landscape of the badlands.
Saturday morning, the flying will be over the city of Granada and vega, taking off from San Miguel Alto and then in the afternoon, between four and six, the balloons will be available for static flights; i.e., tethered, so that children can make ascents and see the views in the municipal fairground.
Again, all of these activities depend on the climatic conditions, mainly the wind – if it’s too strong, nobody takes off, not even the tethered ones.
