Riverside Tree Planting

Tomorrow will see a tree-planting event along Río Guadalfeo where it passes through Salobreña as part of the Custodia de los Ríos programme belonging to the Provincial Council.

SAL Reforesting Rio GuadalfeoThe Junta previously organised a programme along the same lines last year; i.e., the creation of a treelined path running parallel to the river between the beach and the N-340. The problem was that wild animals and domestic goats made a meal out of many of the young saplings.

This time, having learnt from the failure, the saplings will be more robust (older) and plants that herbivores aren’t that keen on. All told around 500 will need to be planted.

Amongst plants that will be introduced are ones intended to eliminate invasive flora species. The Junta targeted wild sugar cane last year and cleared up a lot of it but tomorrows session will target pampas grass and castor-oil plants.

You don’t need to put your name down beforehand as a volunteer – just turn up and they will find tasks for you. If you are interested, turn up at 09.00h at the meeting point, which is next to the bridge near the rivermouth. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, including families.

The Environmental Department will provide the necessary tools/materials, such as gloves and digging tools, although if you wish to bring your own, they will be more than welcome.
