The Archbishop of Granada suffered a road accident when his car left the road and ended up in a ditch on Friday evening.
The 74-year-old prelate spent the following 48 hours hospitalised and under observation due to the blow he received to the head. Fortunately, he suffered no neurological consequences.
The Most Reverend Francisco Javier Martínez is a controversial figure following several of his misogynist statements made in the past.
The accident occurred around 21.20h within the municipality o Cacín (not far from Alhama de Granada) in the area known as the Cañada de la Cima. The Archbishop was returning to the city of Granada having participated in a religious service in Cacín.
It is still not clear what exactly happened but the car was following a forest road when it turned over ending up on its roof. He was able to get out of the car without help but was taken to the the Virgen de las Nieves (Trauma) by another person rather than by ambulance.
Consequently, when the fire service from Alhama de Granada, the Guardia Civil and the ambulance arrived, it was to find the abandoned car with no sign of the Archbishop…
