Infoca was busy in Gualchos yesterday, tackling a hill fire, deploying some 60 personnel and five fire-extinction vehicles.
The residents of around fifty dwellings were evacuated as a precaution mainly because the wind direction kept changing, making it impossible to know where the flames were heading.
It was precisely the strong winds that had prevented air units joining the fire-fighting ground ones.
The Mayor, Antonia Antequera, when interviewed yesterday afternoon said, “if it all goes well, residents can soon return to their home, if not, we have made ready the municipal sports pavilion.”
The Infoca provincial HQ requested that the Junta declare a Level One, Emergency Plan for Forest Fires. Just before five in the afternoon this request was granted. A Level One is declared when it is considered that a fire could put peoples lives in jeopardy and therefore Protección Civil should be alerted in order to coordinate civilian evacuation operations.
By 05.00h this morning, Level One had been deactivated and fire crews (around 80 personnel worked through the night) continued in their efforts to declare the fire “controlado.”
