The Guardia Civil is investigating 29-year-old man in Almuñécar for allegedly attempting to starve his dog to death.
The suspect, who has a criminal record and lives in Torrecuevas, kept his dog tied up on the terrace without food or water, according to the Guardia Civil.
The environmental department of the Guardia Civil, Seprona, were tipped off by a neighbour that the dog was in a deplorable state after several weeks being tied up on the terrace.
Consequently, a Seprona patrol turned up at the house and found the said dog, an American Stafforshire, in an almost skeletal state, living amongst its own excrement. The dog had also lost a lot of hair on its hind quarters and tail. A quick inspection with a chip reader turned up that it didn’t have one.
The police immediately contacted an animal refuge association, SOS Animals in Salobreña, which has taken the animal in.
The Guardia Civil have since located the dog owner and brought him before a justice of the peace, charged with animal cruelty.
Editorial comment: there was an earlier case of animal cruelty in Almuñécar involving a dog being dragged along tied to a moped/scooter, which we did not report. Nor did we report on a case of a horse that was found in a skeletal state, as well, with over-grown hooves, elsewhere from within the province, quite simply because it would have been a litany of animal-cruelty articles.
