Junior School Solidarity

The Virgen de la Antigua Junior School in Almuñécar organised a charity sporting event to raise fund for the cancer assocation, the AECC.

ALM Kids Sports Day in Favour of AECCThe sporting event, which was held last Friday, had a twofold objective: introduce children to the difficulties that life presents, and collaborate with fund raising for research into child cancer.

The Headmaster, Jesús Carretero, explained that the event was within the school’s project: Escuela Espacio de Paz y Hábitos de Vida Saludable (no translation needed, hopefully). It is organised with the collaboration of the Almuñécar branch of the AECC (Asociación de Contra el Cáncer de Almuñécar) and the Parents’ Association (AMPA).

Of course, without the participation of the 350 school kids pounding around in the school playground, it wouldn’t have been possible either.

The Chairwoman of the the local branch of the AECC , Concepción García, together with volunteers from their membership, set up a table with association leaflets as well as balloons and sweets, which proved popular with the ‘athletes.’ The goodies had been sent down by the provincial office especially for the schoolchildren.

The day began with the younger pupils with the objective of “making pupils aware that there is an illness that other boys and girls have to live with each day and express solidarity through donations to benefit medical research.” There were also the races within the school grounds, of course. Finally, they were given a lecture on the lives of children who suffer from cancer.
