Miffed Almuñécar

SPN El Gran WyomingThe TV comedian, Gran Wyoming, has upset the Mayor of Almuñécar and quite a few Almuñequeros after saying that it was a holiday destinations for plebs.

This celebrity hosts a humouristic, pseudo-news programme (El Intermedio) on national TV and had been commenting on the Franco family finally being thrown out of a manor house-cum-castle that Franco had ‘acquired’ shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil war as a sort of victor’s war spoils.

He observed that the Franco family would have to ‘slum it with the rest of the plebs,’ spending holidays in Almuñécar.

Now the conservative Mayor of Almuñécar was fuming and decided to “invite the Gran Wyoming to visit Almuñécar” to see first hand the quality of Almuñécar and all it has to offer. In fact, it was not only the Mayor but even many Granadinos who spend their summers in Almuñécar, too.

So, let’s add some perspectives to this. Almuñécar politicians, no matter what party they belong to, have tried to move the town away from its Sol, Playa y Pipas reputation, which means cheap tourism; people who stay spending as little as possible.

The Mayor’s party, as well as the socialists and Benavides have all used the term “turismo de calidad” as a goal, meaning a ‘better-class of tourist.’  In other words, it is widely believed in Almuñécar that Sanitex tourism (holidaymakers from the city of Granada who make up the bulk of the town’s tourists) is synonymous with cheap tourism,

In other words the comedian was merely expressing what was widely, if unfairly, considered about Costa Tropical’s chief tourist destination.

Having said that, what a bloody fool for having said that on national TV; he could well end up defending himself in a slander law suit.

Finally, if you would like to read just some of the reasons for coming to Almuñécar to spend your holidays, then perhaps you would like to read this article that we published over a decade ago.

We have lived here for nearly 20 years and selected it from many other resorts as to the best place to live . Yes it has changed over the years but has not been spoiled nor lost its character as many other places .

I guess I’m a pleb. I.e. not a ruling class patrician. But I’m happy enough. First visited Almuñécar 17 years ago on a greyish day in October having travelled along the coast from Malaga. I fell in love with the town. It was lovely, bustling, friendly, unpretentious and Spanish. Just enough English by the locals so that it was not intimidating. It’s changed a lot over the years but I still love it. I still don’t know a better coastal town in Andalucia.
