Two officers belonging to the Policía Local in León were set upon by a group of people not wearing masks on a bar terrace, in the early hours of last Friday.
The police station had been contacted by neighbours of the said bar on Avenida Antibióticos because of the amount of people on the small terrace space of a bar, without respecting the norms concerning social distancing or the wearing of masks. The music coming out of the bar was loud, as well.
A police patrol arrived and saw for themselves what was happening and proceeded to ask the people, mostly Spanish Gypsies, to quieten it down, given the hour.
They were met with insults so the officers asked them for their ID and in response between 12 and 14 of the group set on the officers with the first attacks coming from behind, catching them off guard. Neither officer, despite the kicks and blows they received on the ground, got their service pistol out, much less fired warning shots.
The assault only concluded when one of the officers lost consciousness, but in the meantime the same neighbours phoned not only the Policía Local, but also the Policía Nacional. However, when the patrol cars, arrived the attackers had already fled the scene.
The assaulted officers required an ambulance and were taken to hospital. They were sent home later that day, with injuries to their faces and skull but thanks to their bullet-proof vests they avoided injuries to their chests and back.
In the meantime, the police have opened an investigation and one of the assailants has already been identified.
