The Major of Nerja has backed the Nerja Caves administration over their decision to no longer hold concerts down in the caverns.
The first reduction in the number of concerts started in 2016 when only three were held. This season there have been only two.
So, with the aim of concentrating on the preservation of the caves, as of 2020 you will not be able to see ballet performances or classical-musical concerts, for example, in the main gallery of the caves.
Or will you? Mayor Sr. Armijo pointed out that what the Scientific Advisory Board for the Nerja Caves Foundation had recommended was “A strict observance of the protection measures involving any activity within the caves,” which, considers the Mayor, does not rule out the occasional concert as long as it carried out under the supervision of the Board.
He also pointed out that the Town Hall supports the open-air concerts within the Caves’ gardened area, which began in 2017.
The fact is that the Caves Foundation has long destined funds from the entrance takings for cultural events within the municipality. In 2014, for example there were four shows held of the Balcón de Europa, however these concerts have since ceased to take place.
For this reason, as concerts down in the caves will be few and far between even in the best of circumstances, the Town Hall would like the Caves Foundation to promote cultural events around the municipality.
